I am always looking for new parenting tips and tricks when it comes to my kids and I am so very excited about this new idea I am trying with Sarah (6 years old). It is actually based around a program that Dave Ramsey recommends to help kids learn about money and about saving, spending and giving in a smart way.
She has a goal that she has set for herself to save enough money to purchase a Hello Kitty Scooter. We printed up a picture of it and taped it to her saving jar. Her spending jar is for the little everyday thing…like if the ice cream man drives by and she wants something. The giving jar is for giving to our church or another charity of her choice.
We just started the program of the jars this week, but she has been earning money for a couple of weeks now by doing her weekly jobs. That is why there isn’t much in the spending jar yet. She made the decision to put everything she has earned so far into the saving jar.
She earns her money by completing her weekly jobs. If she doesn’t complete her job, then she doesn’t earn her money for that day, (teaching her the importance of hard work hopefully). It is a very visual program, which is great for her. We even sat down and figure out how long it will take her to save up the rest of the money for her scooter if she does all her work (4 weeks).
My 2 year old even showed an interest when we were setting up the jars; Although, her long term goal is saving a penny to ride the horse at Meijer on our weekly shopping trip
The other fun project we are doing at our house is starting our first ever garden. I have a black thumb, so it should be interesting to see how this turns out.
Pictured below are some of the tomato plants that we have started. Most everything else has been transferred to the garden and if they actually produce any vegetables I will be sure to show some photos!
